Culver’s ButterBurgers & Frozen Custard, a popular restaurant chain in the upper Midwest, is coming to Jupiter.

And that’s delicious news for West Palm Beach resident Jeff Needle, who graduated from the University of Wisconsin.

“The custard is incredible. Really creamy, it has a great flavor. They are kind of like Friendly’s restaurants in the northeast,” said Needle, a project manager/engineer with the South Florida Water Management District.

Established in 1984 in Sauk City, Wis. by dairy farmers George and Ruth Culver, the chain also serves burgers, chicken and sandwiches.

Culver’s has 568 restaurants nationwide and 24 restaurants in Florida, including locations in Orlando, Daytona Beach, Tampa and Naples. The Jupiter location will be the first in Palm Beach County, spokesman Paul Pitas said.

Giving back to the community is an important part of Culver’s restaurants, said Pitas. “Scoop of Thanks,” where a portion of the custard purchase price goes to charity, are popular. Culver’s owners also raise money to help the Future Farmers of America, he said.

The Culver’s restaurant is part of a medical building complex under construction in front of the Barcelona Apartments on the west side of Military Trail, across from the U.S. Post Office.

Three-fourths of the 42,000 square feet are planned to be medical office, which is owned and being developed by The Medical Group of South Florida. Plans call for the rest to be retail area and two restaurants.

“We’re expecting the restaurants to be open by October and the medical buildings by Thanksgiving,” said Josh Simon, a principal with FLF 1030 Commercial, LLC, the company that built the 348-unit Barcelona on 29 acres that was once Whitehaven Mobile Home Park.

Simon is a principal with FLF ATC LLC, the company that paid $5.1 million for commercial property that includes the former Rooney’s restaurant and JJ Muggs Stadium Grill. The property is now called Downtown Abacoa.

Total proposed 42,000 total square feet:

• 32,000 – medical office

• 4,000 — fast food restaurant

• 4,500 — restaurant

• 1,700 — retail
