Port Salerno, a community on Florida’s Treasure Coast
As its located close to the St Lucie Inlet, it was considered to become a seaport or possibly a rail line hub to disperse supplies throughout. Port Salerno was always a fishing community, and during World War II it was the site of the Borden Company’s “shark factory,” which made shark repellent.
Many marinas and boat yards are also located in this community providing locals a fisherman’s dream. Today, the little fishing community has become an upscale area with the Chastain Campus of Indian River State College, Martin Memorial Medical Center South, the Morgade Public Library and a diverse shopping area.
