City commissioners approved a $40 million redesign of the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach.

The Kravis Center’s glass-encased lobby will be expanded, and outside, the center’s fountains and hedges will be reduced in size to make room for an expanded pedestrian plaza along Okeechobee Boulevard.

A new parking garage will replace the under-utilized Gosman Amphitheater, bringing valet parking closer to the performance hall and event space.

Judith Mitchell, chief executive officer of the Kravis Center, told the Palm Beach Post that the redesign will integrate the performing arts center with nearby development.

Since the Kravis Center was built 30 years ago, its once-vacant surroundings are now developed, which demonstrates how a performing arts center “can reinvent and reinvigorate a city,” Mitchell said. [Palm Beach Post] – Mike Seemuth
