Monday, Jan. 26, is the scheduled opening day for the Rustic Inn Crab House in Jupiter on A1A.

The longtime Fort Lauderdale restaurant plans to open in the former location of the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. on the Jupiter Inlet just south of U.S. 1, next door to Jetty’s restaurant.

Rustic Inn, famous for its garlic crabs, has been located on a canal on Griffin Road west of I-95 for decades.

Rustic Inn plans call for indoor and outdoor seating for about 460 in the 22,000 square-foot restaurant. There are bars inside and outside, according to store representatives.

Bubba Gump’s opened in April, 2012. With seating for about 470 and a striking view of the inlet and the Jupiter Lighhouse, the restaurant drew strong crowds when it first opened.

But employees and local residents say the crowds dropped off quickly. The restaurant owned by Houston-based Landry Inc. closed in July.

The three-quarter-mile section of A1A between U.S. 1 and Jupiter Beach Road, known as the town’s funky fishing village, is currently undergoing an $8 million facelift. New streetlights, bicycle/walking lanes, underground powerlines, drainage, crosswalks, landscaping and on-street parking are planned.

Completion for the roadwork is planned for the spring, 2016.
